Wife’s bail order remains in force
The Supreme Court yesterday upheld a High Court verdict that granted bail to Tanzila Haque Chowdhury Mitu in a case filed over “provoking suicide” of her husband Mustafa Murshed Akash.
Chamber Judge of the SC’s Appellate Division Justice Hasan Foez Siddique passed “no order” on a petition filed by the government, seeking stay on the HC verdict.
Akash, 32, a doctor of Chattogram Medical College Hospital, died allegedly by suicide at his residence in Chandgaon Residential Area in the port city on January 31. Before suicide, the physician posted a “suicide note” on his Facebook timeline.
Following the incident, Counter Terrorism unit of Chittagong Metropolitan Police arrested Mitu from her relative’s house in Nandankanan area on January 31. Akash’s mother filed the case the next day, accusing Mitu and five others for instigating the suicide.
Following an appeal filed by Tanzila, the HC in August granted permanent bail to her in the case. Then, the government submitted a petition to the Appellate Division seeking stay on the verdict.
