2 cops among 3 sued on extortion charge
Two policemen among three people were sued on charge of extortion in Hakimpur upazila of the district yesterday.
The accused are Mokhlesur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Hakimpur Police Station, Matiur Rahman, sub-inspector of the PS, and Palash Sarkar, an informant of police.
Jobaidul Islam, son of Aftab Uddin of Chopagari village in Ghoraghat upazila, filed the case with the court of Senior Judicial Magistrate Md Rezaul Bari.
Later, the court directed the assistant superintendent of police (crime) to file a report within tomorrow.
The plaintiff in the case statement mentioned that SI Mokhlesur and the police informant detained him on January 5 when he went to Hili Charmatha in Hakimpur upazila.
"Later, the two took me to the police station and demanded Tk one lakh for not having registration of my motorbike. At one stage, they beat me as I failed to pay the money," he said.
"The following day, the family members agreed to pay Tk 20,000 but the OC declined to release me and threatened to implicate me in a robbery case," said Jobaidul, adding that he recently got bail in the case.
Asked about the allegation, the OC claimed himself innocent.
