Acid thrown on pregnant woman

Criminals threw acid on a pregnant woman at Purba-Awrangabad village of Manikganj Sadar early yesterday.

The victim, Parul Akhter, 25, wife of Dubai expatriate Hossain Ali of the village, is undergoing treatment at Singair Upazila Health Complex. She has a seven-year-old son Tasim.

She said her husband returned to Dubai seven months ago after passing his vacation at home. He had divorced her from there through a cellphone call. She has been staying with her son at her husband's house as she did not get any document of the divorce, she said.

Her husband's family members have been torturing her mentally and physically since long, she alleged. They tried several times to get her to leave the house, she added.

Parul was asleep in her room with her son when criminals threw acid on her at around 2:00am. Hearing her screams, locals rushed to the spot and took her to the hospital, said Parul's father Nuru Mia. Her legs, hands and neck were burnt, he added.

Her husband's elder brother Rawshan Ali said the allegations against his family members are not true.

Officer-in-charge of Manikganj Sadar Police Station said police are investigating the matter.
