Clash over paddy harvest leaves one dead, 10 hurt

A man was killed and 10 others were injured as two rival groups of villagers clashed over harvesting paddy from a disputed land at Khoichala village in Raiganj upazila of Sirajganj yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Abdur Rashid, 58, a resident of the village,

Police arrested nine people in connection with the incident.

Police quoted locals as saying that there had been a long-standing dispute Rashid and Amzad of the village over the ownership of a land. Rashid cultivated boro on the land.

As Rashid and his men went to harvest paddy from the land at around 7:00am, Amzad and his supporters obstructed them. Both sides equipped with lethal weapons swooped on each other, leaving at least 11 people, including Rashid injured.

Critically injured Rashid died on the way to hospital while the injured are undergoint treatment at Sirajganj General Hospital.

Officer-in-Charge Rashedul Islam Biswas of Raiganj Police Station said they arrested nine people, including Amzad Hossain, from the spot.

Away in Pabna, an activist of an outlawed party was shot dead in Atghoria upazila yesterday morning.

The deceased was identified as Mithu Hossain, 30, son of Nannu Miah of Narjana village in Ekdanta union of the upazila.
