College boy tortured on theft charge, 2 arrested
Police arrested two youths in Nesarabad upazila of the district on Tuesday on charge of torturing a college student.
The victim is Tamal Mistry, 18, a first year student of Shaheed Smritee Degree College, and son of retired schoolteacher Suresh Mistry of Batnatala village in the upazila.
Following a case filed by the victim's father, the law enforcers arrested Dipankar Mandol, 27, son of Thakur Chad Mandol, and Subrato Mandol, 25, son Shubas Mandol of Gayeshkathi in Sarengkathi union, at night.
Family sources said three youths beat up Tamal in front of Ranjan, member of the union parishad, bringing charge of stealing betel nut from a local garden against him at noon. At one stage, they shaved his head forcibly.
The following day, the three took Tamal to Nesarabad Police Station with the help of the UP member.
The victim's father Suresh said they have a fish farm and a poultry farm at Gayeshkathi village in the upazila.
The three youths often stole fishes from the farm. As he protested the incident, they beat him up.
As he complained with the police station, they beat his son up and shaved off his head as revenge, alleged Suresh.
Though police arrested two accused, they let UP member Ranjan to go, he said.
Mahbubur Rahman, sub-inspector of the PS, claimed that Tamal stole betel nut from the garden.
Police arrested Dipankar and Subrato in the case filed by Tamal's father, said the SI.
