College girl killed after rape, one held

A college girl was killed after rape at Rameshwar village in Madhabpur upazila of Habiganj district on Monday.

The deceased is Shilpi Rani Sarkar, 18, a first year student of Madhabpur Degree College in the area, and daughter of Binita Sarkar of the village.

Family sources said neighbour Rajkumar Sarkar, 35, son of Manmohan Sarkar of Urian village under Nasirnagar upazila in Brahmanbaria district, used to stalk the girl on her way to college for long.

As Shilpi refused his love proposal a few days ago, Rajkumar became very furious. He along with his accomplices picked up the girl from her house on Sunday night when her parents were asleep. 

They then took Shilpi to a vegetable garden at Rameshwar village and hacked her to death after rape.

The following morning, locals found the body in the garden and informed the police.  The law enforcers recovered the body and sent it to Habiganj Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, said Awal, sub-inspector of Madhabpur Police Station.

The villagers later caught Rajkumar, suspecting his involvement in the incident and handed him over to police.

The victim's father filed a rape and murder case on Monday afternoon, said the SI.

During primary interrogation, Rajkumar confessed to killing Shilpi after rape, said Md Mullah Monir, officer-in-charge of the police station.

Police are raiding different areas to arrest the other accused, said the OC.
