Gang kills night guard, takes away transformer

Criminals stole an electric transformer after killing a night guard at Mollapara village under Kalai upazila of Joypurhat district early yesterday.

The gang also beat up an imam of a local mosque as he came forward to help the night guard.

The dead is Shahnur Rahman, 45, son of late Ismail Hossain of Indahar village in the upazila.

The incident took place at around 3:00am.

Police, quoting locals, said a gang of 8/10 members came to village and climbed an electric pole to steal an electric transformer. As Shahnur Rahman tried to resist them, the gang stabbed him on his head.

Hearing Shahnur's screams imam Abdul Hamid rushed in, but the gang members beat him up mercilessly and left the spot. Night guard Shahnur died a few minutes later.

Being informed, police went to the spot, recovered the body and sent it to Joypurhat Modern Hospital for autopsy. The injured imam is undergoing treatment at Kalai Upazila Health Complex.

Contacted, Officer-in-Charge Sirajul Islam of Kalai Police Station said they have already launched a drive to arrest the gang members.
