One sent to jail, another accused still at large

A Bagerhat court yesterday sent a man to jail in a case filed for attempting to rape a college girl in an office of a cable TV service provider in Bagerhat’s Morrelganj on Wednesday.

Police arrested the man, Rubel Howlader, 22, a resident of Politics Mor area in Morrelganj, on Friday when the case was filed accusing him and another youth named Sohel, said KM Azizul Islam, officer-in-charge (OC) of Morrelganj Police Station. 

According to a case statement, Rubel and Sohel forcibly dragged the first-year college student into the office room in Politics Mor area around 2:00pm when she was walking home in the rain.

They recorded video and took pictures of her while trying to rape her by confining her to the room for over one and a half hours.  

After managing to flee the scene, she later disclosed the incident to her parents. Her mother initially filed a complaint with the police station on Thursday night.

While making the arrest on Friday, they also confiscated a cellphone from the arrestee, the OC said, adding that they were conducting raids to arrest Sohel.
