A Patuakhali Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) staff allegedly misappropriated Tk 6.46 crore by not depositing money into the Samity's bank accounts. PBS formed a three-member probe body to investigate the matter.

Md Taribullah Akhand, accountant of Patuakhali PBS, said Jayeda Khanom, cashier of the PBS, started misappropriating money from 2005-06 fiscal year by not depositing the money paid by consumers into the bank accounts of PBS.

There should have been Tk 10.85 crore in the account concerned, but only Tk 4.43 crore was found in February 2016, he added.

On March 31, PBS formed a three-member probe body, headed by Abu Bakar Siddik, deputy general manager (DGM) of Baufal zone, to investigate the matter. The two members are Abu Saleh Md Abdul Hamid, assistant general manager (Administration) and Md Joynal Abedin, plant accountant.

"We asked the probe body to submit its report within 10 working days," said Md Hafij Uddin, general manager (GM) of PBS.

Jayeda Khanom was suspended on April 2. She has been absconding since then, and this correspondent failed to contact her as her cellphone was turned off.
