Two killed in clash over gambling in Habiganj
Two people were killed and at least 45 others, including three cops, were injured in a clash between two groups of villagers over sharing the money collected from gambling spot on the bank of Sutang River in Lakhai upazila of Habiganj district on Wednesday evening.
The deceased are Hadiza Begum, 50, wife of Modhu Mia of Ashera village in Sadar upazila, and Rafiq Uddin, 35, son of Helal Uddin of Korab village in Lakhai upazila of the district.
Of the injured, three constables, Masud Rana, 23, Hasan, 25, and Sajib Talukder, 22, of Lakhai Police Station, were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital, said Mozammel Haque, officer in-charge of the police station.
Locals arranged the gambling on the bank of the river where a day long annual fair of Hindus was held.
Police quoted locals as saying that the two groups—one from Ashera village and the other from Korab village locked in an altercation over sharing of money collected from the gambling spot around 6:00pm.
At one stage, they attacked each other with sharp weapons and exchanged several gunshots that left 47 people, including three constables, injured.
Of the injured, Hadiza died at Habiganj Sadar Hospital while Rafiq on way to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital. The rest of the injured were admitted to Habiganj Sadar Hospital and Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital.
On information, police rushed to the spot and fired several rounds of tear-gas shells and rubber bullets to bring the situation under control, said Nazim Uddin, officer in-charge of Sadar Police Station.
