Two upazila chairmen, vice chairman suspended

Charge-sheeted in arson, vandalism, arms cases

The chairman and a vice chairman of Ghoraghat Upazila Parishad in Dinajpur district, accused in different violence cases filed during and after the January 5 parliamentary elections, have been suspended as a court accepted charge sheets against them.

They are chairman Md Shamim Hossain Chowdhury, president of Ghoraghat upazila unit of BNP, and vice chairman Md Alamgir Hossain, ameer of the upazila unit of Jamaat-e-Islami.

Alamgir Hossain is accused in seven cases while Shamim in a single case.

The deputy commissioner's office and the upazila nirbahi officer on Tuesday received the suspension letters, issued by the Ministry of Local Government and Rural Development on September 22.

The letters were signed by Dr Julia Moieen, senior assistant secretary of the ministry, said sources.

The court recently accepted the charge sheets against the accused, said police.

According to our Mymensingh correspondent, the chairman of Dhubaura Upazila Parishad in the district was suspended on Wednesday as a charge sheet in an arms case filed under the Speedy Trial Act was accepted by a court.

Following an order issued by LGRD, chairman Maznu Mridha was suspended in the afternoon, UNO Md Anisuzzaman Khan said, adding that the case was filed against Maznu under the Arms Act in 2010.

Maznu, a member of Dhubaura upazila unit of Awami League, took part in last year's upazila polls as a rebel candidate defying the party decision, said sources.

In Bogra, seven Jamaat-Shibir men of the district have been shown arrested in five more cases, including those for sabotage, arson and vandalism, filed during the January 5 national elections, reports our correspondent.

They are former district ameer of Jamaat and vice president of Sramik Kalyan Federation central committee Golam Rabbani, secretary of Jamaat's district unit Nazim Uddin, Shibir's Bogra town unit president Rezaul Karim, former president of Shibir Bogra town unit Alauddin Sohel, Shibir activists of the town unit Abdul Hadi alias Hadi, Rashidul Islam and Shabbir Shahriar.

Earlier, the seven were sent to jail in different other cases filed during January 5 elections, said Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Gaziur Rahman.

The court of Bogra Senior Judicial Magistrate Abul Kalam Azad on Tuesday issued the order after the investigation officers of the cases sought their arrest, he said.
