Cultural Revolution on Facebook

Arman R. Khan

Very recently, a trend has bloomed on Facebook, where each person puts up pictures of the cover of any book or album by their favourite author or band, or pictures of artworks by any esteemed artist. This fad has been picked up by many, even those who usually don't participate in such trends, as it marks cultural refinement that is not aplenty these days. However, one cannot just choose which author, musician or artist they want to post about; they are assigned one by their friends. This is how it happens.
The Origin: The origin of this particular Facebook trend, like most others, remains unknown. It went viral within a few days, but it's difficult to pinpoint where and when it started, and by whom.
The Process: Let's say one of your friends has put up one of these chain posts on their own timeline, regarding their favourite author, band or artist. If you wish to participate in this trend, you have to like that friend's post. S/he will then assign you a different author, artist or band, and you then have to post up a picture accordingly, accompanied by a small text that explains to others what this is all about.
The Purpose: From what I've gathered from the accompanying texts, it appears that the idea of this entire trend is to keep good art, music and literature alive. In these times when our Facebook homepages are filled with Instagrammed pictures of meals and cats, selfies, exaggerated descriptions of dull everyday events and innumerable underground concerts, this 'Cyber Renaissance', as I'd like to call it, reminds people of the real works of art and gives them a chance to appreciate them.
The Variations: The trend requires people to post pictures of book/album covers. However, in some cases, you may have to add multiple book covers, quotes, or pictures of singles by the band. Also, sometimes bands are not the requirement, so long as it's a musician.
The Reception and Outcome: Facebook dwellers have come to love this trend, as it gives them a chance to recall their favourite music, books or drawings, and also because they can show the world their eclectic taste. Moreover, this trend of sharing has led many of us to discover many novels, music and art that we otherwise would probably not have found by ourselves. Say, you liked a post of a friend, who assigns you a band that you've never heard of before. To join the bandwagon, you have to put up an album cover of said band and in the process, you discover their music.
The Possibilities: At the time of writing this article, the trend had only covered music, books, and art, and borderline touching on movies. But a friend of mine mentioned in a discussion earlier that this trend, if kept alive, has the scope to cover a vast range of fields, such as sports personalities, unsung heroes, et al.
This trend has incited a movement that allows us to improve our general knowledge. It presents to a generation of Facebook addicts how life is, or at least was, outside Facebook, in a sea of words, colours and tunes.
