Subtitles of Squid Game ‘change meaning’ of Netflix series

Some Korean-speaking fans are saying that the "botched" subtitles of "Squid Game" have changed the show's meaning for English-speaking viewers.

The Korean-language drama, "Squid Game", mainly depicts an alternative or parallel world where people in debt compete in deadly games. However, Youngmi Mayer, a fluent native speaker states that "the closed-caption subtitles are so bad that the original meaning of the show is frequently lost".

In a Twitter post Youngmi shared that "The dialogue was so well written and zero of it was preserved (in the subtitles)".

 

Streaming giant Netflix is yet to respond to this comment.

This series is about to become Netflix's biggest original series, beating "Bridgeton" (2020). The plot of "Squid Game" revolves around a group of people who are involved in a survival game, and have the chance to get 45.6 billion Korean won, provided that they win the game.
