‘ We always considered each other no less than family’

Renowned actor, playwright, academian, and Ekushey Padak awardeee Dr Enamul Haque passed away earlier today, leaving the entertainment fraternity, and his legions of admirers and well-wishers in dismay.
Eminent cultural personality and Member of Parliament Asaduzzaman Noor shared a close bond with Haque, having known him since before the independence of Bangladesh. They worked together in Nagorik Natya Sampradaya for many years, and also collaborated on numerous television projects. In a recent conversation with The Daily Star, Noor looked back on his memories with Haque.

He was immensely patriotic and brave. He loved his country, and its people. During the movement against Ershad, he and his wife were at the forefront of the protests. My kids grew up in front of him, and we always considered each other no less than family. We have lost a great soul.

He acted on the stages of Bangla Academy, Dhaka University, and the Shaheed Minar — he harboured a deep love for the stage. He was with Nagorik Natya Sampradaya since their inception. I joined the troupe after the independence. I have many fond memories of acting with him on the stage.

I visited his house numerous times over the years, and I hold our chats close to my heart. Those days are now flashing in front of my eyes.

After he left Nagorik Natya Sampradaya, he started Nagorik Natyagon. He led the troupe very well. His daughter, Hridi Haq, has done some excellent work for the troupe.

I rarely met him after I got into politics, but we stayed in touch. I think that was possible because of our strong bond.

He was a prolific screenwriter. I have acted in many tele-fictions written by him. He was a wonderful man, and he was like family to me.
