Making fake notes: Gang members arrested, secured bail, went back to forgery

Star Online Report

They were selling fake notes of Tk one lakh for Tk 7,000.

They were arrested but securing bail, they got back to making counterfeit notes -- especially targeting the cattle markets, ahead of Eid-ul-Azha.

Police's detective branch (DB) claimed to have learned of the activities of the inter-district note forgery gang, following arrest of three members including the ringleader last night.

The arrestees are: Md Saiful (32), the ringleader, and his two associates Md Rubel (28), and Alam Hossain (28), said Razib Al Masud, deputy commissioner of DB Lalbagh division.

DB police also recovered around Tk 35 lakh of counterfeit notes, fake note making machine, one laptop, one laminating machine and ink from the arrestees' possession.

Based on information, police first arrested Alam from the capital's Bangshal area with Tk 3 lakh of fake notes, DC Razib told The Daily Star.

During interrogation, Alam told detectives that their leader Saiful was making the fake notes in a house in Keraniganj area of Dhaka, he said, adding that police later conducted a drive at the house and arrested Saiful and Rubel, recovering Tk 32 lakh of fake notes.

Saiful was arrested earlier and a case was also found to be registered against him, he said.

"We have come to know that the gang used to spread fake notes using four members -- Habib Mollah, Jibon, Mujibor and Rana-- in the market. We arrested them earlier but they secured bail and went back to forgery," said DC Razib.

A case was filed against the gang with Bangshal Police Station.

"We would place the arrestees on remand to know whereabouts of their associates and to check whether they have been able to spread fake notes in the market," he added.
