Private bus owners in Thakurgaon have been forcing passengers not to travel in BRTC buses since December 31. They have deployed a group of people at BRTC bus stop in the town so that the passengers cannot travel in the state-owned buses. During a visit to local BRTC bus stand yesterday, this correspondent observed that a group of people deployed by Private Bus Owners' Association were forcing the passengers in presence of a police sergeant not to get in BRTC buses. Secretary of Thakurgaon Private Bus Owners' Association Tuhin said they are only preventing local passengers from traveling by BRTC buses. But the passengers protested it, saying that the hired people of the bus owners are also forcing the long route passengers. Aleya Begum and Rupom, lecturers at Moidandighi College, and Nazrul Islam, assistant professor of Boda Pathraj College, said they were forced to travel in BRTC buses. They want to get rid of the illegal acts of the private bus owners. They alleged the private bus drivers and conductors fleece passengers, misbehave with them and do not maintain time schedule. Passengers said BRTC buses provide better service for them and maintain time schedule. BRTC service is also helpful for those who travel to their work places regularly. When contacted, Deputy Commissioner (DC) Munshi Shahabuddin Ahmed said he is aware of the matter and is taking necessary steps to resolve it.
