Thakurgaon district unit of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee formed a human chain in Thakurgaon town yesterday demanding early start of the trial of war criminals. The programme marking the 18th founding anniversary of the committee was followed by a discussion. Paying tribute to Jahanara Imam, who lost her son and husband during the Liberation War, speakers at the discussion said as leader of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee she played great role to create mass awareness about trial of the war criminals. She took the noble and arduous task despite suffering from incurable disease cancer. The organisation has been playing an important role to create awareness about the demand for war criminals' trial among the common people, speakers said. The present government should start trial of war criminals within a short time as it was in their election pledge and people gave verdict in favour of it in the last parliamentary election, they said, adding that trial of war criminals is needed to establish justice, sustainable democracy and communal harmony in the society. Urging all to be vocal for trial of war criminals and boycott them socially and politically, speakers said war criminals have no right to participate in politics of the country as they played role against the country during the Liberation War. It is regrettable that the anti-liberation forces have managed to strengthen their position in the country and for this reason, Islami Chhatra Shibir, student wing of Jamaat-e-Islami, can show the audacity to threaten the nation after 38 years of independence, they said. Demanding ban on such fundamentalist parties for the sake of safety and development of the country, they said Pakistan now faces security threat and economic and social disaster as that country earlier gave shelter to the Islamist militant outfits to serve their narrow interest. Convener of Thakurgaon district unit of Ekattorer Ghatak Dalal Nirmul Committee Akter Hossain Raza presided over the meeting while its member secretary advocate Momtazur Rahaman Bipul, Awami League leader Mostaq Alam Tulu, Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal leader Rajiur Rahman addressed, among others. Freedom fighters, professionals, political activists and common people attended the programme. The nirmul committee also held similar programmes in several other districts.
