Corruption Case
Ex-ambassador Nazimullah asked to surrender by April 25
Former ambassador ATM Nazimullah Chowdhury has been asked to surrender before the trial court by April 25 in connection with a corruption case, according to a verdict of the Appellate Division of the Supreme Court whose copy was released yesterday.
In the verdict, the apex court also said that Nazimullah, a fugitive, is not entitled to obtain any order from the court in his favour.
The special judge's court No.-9 in Dhaka will take proper steps for apprehension of Nazimullah, if he fails to surrender to that court, it added.
A four-member bench of the Appellate Division headed by Justice MA Matin on March 14 this year directed Nazimullah, a former Bangladeshi ambassador in Abu Dhabi, to surrender before the lower court in connection with the case.
On that day, it was not known when Nazimullah has to surrender to the trial court.
The Appellate Division in the verdict directed him to surrender within six weeks since the date of the verdict.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) filed the case on May 14, 2008 with Shahbagh police station on charges of causing a loss of Tk 21 lakh to the state exchequer through misuse of power and deception.
The High Court (HC) stayed the proceedings of the case against Nazimullah on November 12, 2008, although he never surrendered before any court in this case.
ACC lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan yesterday told The Daily Star that as per the apex court direction, Nazimullah has to surrender to the lower court by April 25.
