6 snatchers get life term

The Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal here sentenced six snatchers to life-term rigorous imprisonment in connection with killing a businessman in 2006. The court also fined the convicts Tk 10,000 each, in default of which they will have to suffer imprisonment for two years more. Judge Shafiqul Karim of the tribunal gave the verdict for killing garment businessman Shafiqul Azam on July 4, 2006. The accused were Jakir Hossain, Shahid Raza, Sohel Mia, Dalim Mallik, Mohammad Hossain and Milton Sarker. The court released four others, including Panu Bepari, Al Amin Gazi, Kamal Sikder and Belal Hossain, as the allegations brought against them could not be proved. According to the deposition of the case, Shafiqul, a garment businessman fell victim to the snatchers in the early morning on July 5 in 2006 while going to his residence by a CNG-run autorickshaw. The snatchers strangled Shafiqul and left his body in Bayezid Bostami area. The businessman arrived in Chittagong from Dhaka the same morning. Later, police recovered the body. The victim's father Master Abdul Jabbar filed a murder case with Bayezid Police Station.
