Huge telephone cables seized: 2 thieves held

Police yesterday caught two members of a gang of telephone cable thieves in the city's Sutrapur area and recovered a cable-laden truck. The cables were stolen from Sutrapur area, leaving around 1000 telephone lines disconnected. The arrestees were identified as Nizam Udddin, 26, of Barisal and Mohammad Manik, 48, of Pirojpur. Both Nizam, a resident of the city's Madhya Badda, and Manik, a resident of Kamrangirchar, were earlier arrested for the same charges, police said. Sutrapur police station Officer-in-Charge Nazrul Islam said a patrol police team caught the two early in the morning after a chase when they were trying to speed away in the truck loaded with the cables stolen from Ram Krishna Mission Road area. "A gang of eight to nine thieves stole the telephone cables cutting these entering the manholes in RK Mission Road area the night from Sunday and early hours of Monday", Nazrul said.
