Amendments to ACC Act protested

Two elements of the Awami League-led grand alliance -- Jatiya Samajtantrik Dal (JSD) and Gonotantri Party -- yesterday protested amendments to Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Act by the cabinet on Monday. In separate statements, they said if the amendments were put into practice, ACC would become a commission loyal to the government. JSD President Hasanul Haque Inu MP and General Secretary Sharif Nurul Ambia said the amendments would make ACC weak, powerless and ineffective, which would weaken the initiative of the government to build a society based on good governance and free from corruption. They called on the government not to bow down to bureaucracy and rethink about the amendments and make ACC a truly independent, powerful and effective commission. Gonotantri Party President Mohammad Afzal and General Secretary Nurur Rahman Selim said ACC would become powerless if the amendment, which ensures up to five years in jail of the complainant if any case is proved false. It would also inspire corrupt people. Such amendments are the breach of promises made by Awami League to the countrymen, they added.
