12 billboards removed from DU campus
Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) in a drive has dismantled 12 illegal billboards on the Dhaka University campus.
The drive, led by chief town planner Sirajul Islam and magistrate Khalilur Rahman, started in TSC area around 10:00pm on Tuesday and continued till 5:00am yesterday.
Campus sources said some 20 to 25 policemen and 40 workers took part in the drive.
Some Bangladesh Chhatra League men have been earning a good amount of money by leasing out the billboards for advertisements of commercial products to private companies since the present government assumed power early last year.
DCC launched the drive, as DU sent a letter to them last month requesting demolition of the hoardings.
Vice Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique and Proctor Dr KM Saiful Islam Khan visited the spot when the drive had started.
DU estate office sources said the hoardings were illegal, as their contracts with private companies were cancelled in between 2006 and 2007.
