Four killed in city road crashes

Four people were killed in separate road accidents in the city yesterday. A head-on collision between a cargo-van and a human-hauler left two people dead and 10 others injured at Ashulia on the outskirts of the city yesterday while a speeding covered-van crushed two rickshaw-van pullers at Khilkhet in the city early in the morning. In Ashulia, a Dhaka-bound cargo-van of Swarna Cargo Service and a Baipile-bound human hauler collided in Tongibari area around 11:30am. Of the deceased, one was identified as Yunus Ali, 65, an employee of Jahangirnagar University while identity of other could not be known immediately. Both of the dead were human-hauler passengers. The injured were rushed to local hospitals and clinics. The drivers of both the vehicles ran away leaving their vehicles on the road after the accident, creating a severe traffic jam for over one hour. The locals rescued the victims but found Yunus dead on the spot while another unidentified passenger succumbed to his injuries on the way to hospital. Ashulia police seized both the vehicles. Meanwhile, two rickshaw van pullers were crushed to death under the wheels of a covered van at Nikunja-2 of Khilkhet when they were on their way to Milbarak in Tongi pulling their vans at around 4:30am. They were identified as Babul Miah, 35, of Raipura upazila in Narsingdi and Abdur Rahim, 35, of Melandaha upazila in Jamalpur. Local people rushed them to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) where on-duty doctors declared them dead. Khilkhet police station officer-in-charge SM Badiuzzaman said the driver and helper of the killer vehicle ran away leaving the vehicle on the road.
