Bangladesh ponders reopening missions in Brazil, Iraq
The Foreign Ministry has moved to reopen missions in Brazil and Iraq and open different missions in important countries in South America, Central America East Europe, Central Asia and Africa, a parliamentary body yesterday said.
The parliamentary standing committee on foreign affairs ministry also asked the ministry officials to increase their efficiency and competency to uphold country's interests in bi-lateral and international issues.
“Brazil is a superpower in South America. We can send manpower there and earn foreign exchange. But we are yet to reopen our missions there which was closed in 1994,” Abul Hassan Mahmood Ali, chairman of the committee, told The Daily Star after the meeting at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.
He also said Bangladesh does not have missions in any of the countries in South America.
According to the foreign ministry's website, Bangladesh has as many as 58 foreign missions in different countries.
Ali, also a former ambassador, said the country will be benefited in different ways if we open foreign missions in important countries in East Europe, Central America and Central Asia.
“We should have resumed operations in our embassy in Iraq after the war was over as there are vast opportunity in this middle east country,” said Ali, also a ruling Awami League lawmaker.
On increasing efficiency and skill of foreign ministry's officials, he said they need to be trained and should know different foreign languages for better communication with the respective countries.
