AL leader gunned down in Jessore
An Awami League leader was gunned down at Noapara in Jessore on Thursday night.
Raju Ahmed, 35, also one of the accused in a sugar hoarding case, came under attack at Noapara ferry ghat at around 11:00pm when he was returning home at Purakhali in Abhaynagar by a motorcycle from his business establishment, Sajib Trade International.
Police and locals said a gang four or five criminals shot Raju in the forehead and chest at point-blank range when he was about to leave Noapara ferry ghat after crossing the River Bhairab by a ferry. He died on the spot.
The gang then exploded several bombs to create a panic and escaped the scene.
Later, the police sent the body of Raju to Jessore General Hospital for autopsy.
Police suspect that members of the Biplobi Communist Party, an extremist outfit, might have killed him to take revenge as three of their leaders were killed in crossfire with the Rapid Action Battalion (Rab).
