Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has lauded the role of the Liberation War Museum in projecting the correct history of the heroic war of the Bangalee nation and protecting the history from distortion. Hasina expressed the view while receiving cheques from the Bankers Association of Bangladesh in aid of the Liberation War Museum at her office in the city yesterday. Thirty-three commercial banks, including four state-owned banks, donated more than Tk 24 crore to the Liberation War Museum for conducting its activities including research on the War of Liberation, PM's Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad said. The PM noted that the museum is playing a commendable role in bringing the spirit of the War of Liberation back to the mind of the people as well as depicting the real history for the new generation. As a result, she said voters of the new generation expressed their wholehearted support to the war crimes trial and rejected the anti-liberation forces in the last parliamentary elections. On distortion of history, Hasina said after the assassination of Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the anti-liberation forces had started to twist the country's history of liberation. The defeated forces made ill-attempt to erase the glorious history of the war and memories of the Father of the Nation from the people's mind, which they failed, she said, adding that Liberation War Museum has played a tremendous role in this respect. Hasina recalled that after returning home from exile in 1981 she and her sister Sheikh Rehana handed over their paternal house at Dhanmondi 32 to the Bangabandhu Memorial Museum in a bid to preserve the country's real history. She also recounted her personal initiative and cooperation of Rehana's in establishing the Liberation War Museum by giving advice, various documents and rare pictures of liberation war to the museum. The PM said her government took initiative to establish a cultural hub around Suhrawardy Udyan, Bangla Academy and Ramna Park to protect the memory of historic events including 7th March speech of Bangabandhu. Praising the efforts of the bankers association, Hasina said the donation to the museum will help preserve the true history of the War of Liberation. She also thanked the bankers for their contribution at the time of nation's crises in the past. She recalled with gratitude their efforts to help the families of killed army officials after BDR carnage last year. Finance Minister A M A Muhith, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman and Bangladesh Association of Bank (BAB) Chairman Nazrul Islam Mazumder also spoke at the function while Trustee of Liberation War Museum Mafidul Haque was present.
