Ctg JCD councils fail to form committees

Staff Correspondent, Ctg
Biennial councils of Chittagong city unit and South district unit of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) were held yesterday without formation of the committees. JCD central leaders present at the councils said the new committee would be declared within 15 days based on opinions given by councillors of the JCD units at the councils in writing. Councillors and leaders and activists, however, expressed disappointment over the process and feared of nepotism and irregularities in selecting new leaders. JCD central committee leaders, including its President Sultan Salauddin Tuku and General Secretary Amirul Islam Khan Alim, were present at the two councils. The city unit biennial council was held after over seven years while the last council was held on March 29, 2003. Incumbent city unit General Secretary Ahmedul Islam Chowdhury Rasel read out the organisation report at the council held at Theatre Institute Chittagong with outgoing city unit President Mosharaf Hossain Dipti in the chair. A total of 109 councillors out of 119 submitted names of the new leaders in written forms at the council. Addressing the council, Salauddin Tuku stressed the need for greater unity of the leaders and activists to strengthen the organisation. He urged all leaders and activists to take preparation for a mass movement against the "oppression" of the present government. Tuku said they would take the written forms to Dhaka and new leaders or new committee would be formed according to the councillors' opinions and declared later. Protesting the process, a number of councillors demanded formation of the committee through voting. The JCD president tried to pacify the councillors saying that they are following the same process to form new committees of 85 units of the organisation across the country within the shortest possible time. Councils of 71 units, including the city unit, have already been completed, he said. After the council, JCD General Secretary Amirul Islam told The Daily Star that the new committee would be declared within 15 days. He, however, could not confirm that whether it would be a full-fledged committee or a convening one. Earlier in the morning, the South District unit council was held at a community centre in the city's Bibirhat area. The last council of the unit was held in 2002. A total of 190 councillors submitted forms with their opinions about the new leaders at the council in presence of JCD central leaders. Outgoing district unit president Mohsin Chowdhury Rana presided over the council. Mentionable, council of JCD Chittagong North District unit was held on July 28.
