Murder Attempt
Police verifying Ajmiri's statements
Police started investigating the alleged murder attempt on Ajmiri, who said, managed to run away from the hands of her husband just as he was about to set her on fire.
Police found Ajmiri unconscious on the pavement in front of Gono Bhaban on Monday night with her hands tied, mouth stuffed with pieces of clothes and her body soaked with kerosene. She alleged that her husband had her tied up in a microbus and was searching for a place to burn her.
Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Chief Riaz Hossain told The Daily Star that although there is no case filed with the station, they have started probing the issue.
Ajmiri's statements on her husband Rubel, in-laws and the incident are being verified, he said adding that they have also collected information on Ajmiri.
Riaz Hossain yesterday afternoon said they went to the house of Ajmiri's in-laws in Kamrangirchar where they found validity of their marriage and confirmed that Rubel has several wives.
After talking with locals, police also ensured that Ajmiri's husband had various allegations against him. These include cheating several women into marrying him and cheating people after selling their property.
They however did not find any involvement of her mother-in-law and sister-in-law in the incident, which Ajmiri had earlier alleged to police.
Police are trying to catch Rubel who has absconded.
Coordinator of OCC Dr Bilkis Begum said Ajmiri was admitted to OCC under her supervision after her husband tortured her in August 19, 2009. Bangladesh National Woman Lawyers' Association (BNWLA) assisted her in filing a case under Women and Children Repression Prevention Act against her husband with Hazaribag Police Station.
