Environmentalists yesterday demanded formation of separate commission to stop mixing toxic chemicals with food. Some businessmen are mixing toxic chemicals with food including iftar in absence of proper monitoring and enforcing laws. So formation of a separate commission to ensure food safety has turned into an urgent need for the people, they said. They placed the demand at a human chain to stop mixing of toxic chemical with food including iftar jointly organised by the Poribesh Bachao Andolon (Poba) and Dhaka district unit Rover of Bangladesh Scouts in front of the Fine Arts Institute of Dhaka University (DU) in the city. Addressing the meeting Poba Chairman Abu Naser Khan termed the process of mixing toxic chemical with food as silent genocide. “People are suffering from different kinds of deadly diseases such as cancer, kidney and liver diseases and some vital organs of human body are being disabled because of taking the toxic food,” he said. “Such illegal activities must be stopped immediately to prevent unwanted death and disabilities,” he added. He cautioned if such situation continued, the nation would certainly turn disable. Around 92 percent of fast food shops in the city serve stale food for 2 to 5 days that are harmful for health, he said. Nirapod Development Foundation (NDF) Chairman Ibnul Syed Rana said the trend of mixing toxic chemical with food is on the rise during Ramadan. Different kinds of delicious Iftar are made of toxic colour and contaminated oil. Their other demands include strict enforcement of Consumer Rights Act, conducting regular drives against contaminated food, awarding exemplary punishment to the people involved with mixing toxic chemicals with food, using of food grade colour instead of using toxic colour and creating mass awareness against toxic food. Atiquzzaman Ripon, secretary of Dhaka district unit Rover of Bangladesh Scouts and SM Saikat executive director of Serac Bangladesh spoke at the function.
