Women lawmakers of Awami League yesterday urged Opposition Leader and BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia not to celebrate her birthday on August 15, as it is the National Mourning Day. The demand came at a human chain programme formed by the women lawmakers of reserved seats in front of the National Press Club in the city. Speaking at the programme, Awami League Joint Secretary Mahbubul Alam Hanif said, “The celebration of fake birthday on August 15, the day when Bangabandhu was brutally killed, proves mean-mindedness of Khaleda.” He said Khaleda Zia should apologise to countrymen for the involvement in corruption of her and her family members. The AL leader questioned if Khaleda and her family members were not involved in corruption then why did she whiten black money and why the federal court of United States filed case against her son Koko. AL lawmaker Tarana Halim said, “She [Khaleda] has several birth dates. One is according to her school registration, one according to her marriage registration and one she disclosed when she became prime minister in 1991.” “She must tell which one is correct,” she added. “Night on August 15, 1975 women and children were killed. How could she celebrate a fake birthday on that day since she is a woman and a mother,” said Tarana. Nineteen woman lawmakers and leaders and activists of Mohila Awami League, Jubo Mohila League and Mohila Sramik League participated in the human chain.
