Traditions to be lost without their rights
Culture and traditions of indigenous people in the country will become extinct in future if their rights are not protected, debaters of the indigenous communities said yesterday.
The debaters said this while speaking on "Development and existence of indigenous people depend on the will of state".
Institute for Environment and Development and Oxfam jointly organised the open and traditional debate competitions marking the International Day of World's Indigenous People 2010.
Two debate teams comprised of 14 indigenous students from Dhaka and Jahangirnagar University participated in the debate competition.
The speakers said the indigenous people are gradually losing their rights on land, forest and other natural resources, which are necessary for their existence.
The speakers urged the government to take proper initiative to protect and ensure constitutional rights of the indigenous people.
Justice Guhlam Rabbani attended the programme as the chief guest while Dhaka University Prof Dalem Chandra Barman moderated the debate session.
The DU team won the debate competition.
