Six bandits among 9 held with booties

Police arrested nine persons, including six robbers, and recovered some looted gold and money from different parts of the city on Sunday and yesterday. They also seized some tools and lethal weapons, foreign currencies and cellphone sets worth around Tk 19 lakh taken away from the house of one Nurul Haque at East Ulan in the city's Rampura on July 31. Police arrested ringleader Rashed Chowdhury from his Moulvirtek house in East Rampura early Sunday, said OC Sayedur Rahman of Rampura Police Station. Following his confessional statement, the law enforcers conducted raids at Kamrangirchar, Jatrabari, Lalbagh and Siddhirganj and arrested eight others. Of them, Kajol Chandra Ghosh, Biswajit Ghosh and Shaheen Chowdhury are goldsmiths at Tantibazar, said the OC. On information, they recovered 5.5 tolas of stolen gold and one cellphone set from the possession of the three goldsmiths, OC Rahman said adding, they also recovered looted money of Tk 40,500, and four knives and tools used in the robbery. Police said the arrestees are the members of an organised gang of bandits active at different parts of the city. In preliminary interrogation, the robbers confessed to committing robberies. They have a network with goldsmiths in Old Dhaka where they sell looted gold ornaments, said the OC quoting the arrestees.
