Call to strictly follow fire protection design

Speakers at a meeting yesterday stressed for strictly following fire protection designs while constructing high-rise buildings to reduce fire accidents and save lives and properties. A research team of Tokyo University of Science (TUS) and Building Research Institute, Japan held the view exchange meet with fire fighting officials, engineers, town planners and public representatives held at Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) auditorium. The foreigm team is visiting to attend a seminar titled “Urban building fire issues in Bangladesh: Bashundhara City fire and Nimtoli fire” under BUET-Japan Institute for Disaster Prevention and Urban Safety Programme. Speakers urged for constructing buildings with spacious corridors and emergency exits following fire protection engineering. There should be entry points allowing easy access to fire fighting vehicles. They also called for preserving water-bodies or reservoirs in every locality to ensure water supply to extinguish fires and raising mass awareness in this regard. Prof Dr Shinichi Sugahara, director of Center for Fire Science and Technology at TUS, assured all out cooperation to develop fire protection system in urban buildings to ensure safety of life and property. Visiting team Coordinator Sajnib Barua, CCC Chief Town Planner Rezaul Karim, Chittagong Development Authority Chief Town Planner Shahinul Islam Khan, Fire Service and Civil Defense Director (planning, development and training) MM Motiur Rahman, its Chittagong regional headquarters Deputy Director Ruhul Amin, CCC Ward Councillors Rekha Alam, Monowara Begum Moni, Ferdous Begum Munni and Chowdhury Hasan Mahmud Hasni also addressed the meeting.
