Stop piracy, confiscate all pirated audio, video CDs: HC
The High Court yesterday directed the government to immediately stop piracy through properly enforcing the copyright law, and confiscate all the pirated copies of audio and video CDs from markets.
The court also declared piracies of audio music, video films and documents illegal.
An HC bench of Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik and Justice Sheikh Md Zakir Hossain also ordered the government to submit a report on the steps it has taken to stop piracy every three months to this court.
The bench came up with the verdict following a writ petition stating that CDs (compact discs) on the pirated copies of films and other documents are being sold in the market damaging the film and music industries.
President of Bangladesh Film Production and Distribution Association Gazi Mazharul Anwar and secretary of Bangladesh Music Industries Owners' Association Sheikh Shahed Ali jointly filed the writ petition in May this year.
Secretaries to the ministries of home, industries, finance, commerce, cultural affairs, information, science and technology, inspector general of police, director general of rapid action battalion, chairman and registrar of copyright board have been made respondents in the court order.
Deputy Attorney General Nazrul Islam Talukder standing for the government said the government is taking steps against piracy. Barrister Rabiul Hasan and Barrister Mehedi Hasan appeared for the petitioners.
