Shafique urges journalists

Law Minister Shafique Ahmed yesterday urged the journalists to present "objective and factual" news to accelerate the country's democratic progress and protect human rights. Terming newspapers the "fourth pillar" of democracy, he said, “In a democratic country, media can play a key role to uphold democracy and protect human rights. So, the journalists should more concentrate on presenting objective and credible news.” The minister made the remarks while addressing the inaugural ceremony of a workshop styled "Ethics and Principal of Journalism" organised by the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) at its auditorium in the city. He said people have the right to know the government's activities and decisions. He hoped that if the journalists avoid publishing partial news, Bangladesh would make a real progress in all sectors. "You don't need help of any political platform for publishing credible news," law minister told the reporters. The minister said that unreliable source-based news couldn't serve the nation rather it could be harmful for the country. "You [journalists] should cross check the information gathered for [your] news before its release," said Shafique. Journalist Ataus Samad, General Secretary of DRU Pathik Saha, among others, spoke at the workshop while its president Shameen Ahmed in the chair. Around 40 journalists from print and electronic media participated in the workshop.
