'Come forward to stop violence against women'
Oppression against women in society will stop once everyone comes forward to prevent it, said State Minister for Women and Children Affairs Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday.
Speaking at a seminar as the chief guest, the minister urged the mass media to play an effective role alongside the government to create awareness and prevent violence against women.
“We should all ethically come forward to prevent torture against women,” said Shirin at the seminar on the role of mass media in preventing torture against women and gender equity, at a city hotel.
“Our combined effort is a must to prevent ongoing repression against women,” she observed.
The minister said alongside presenting the stories of torture on women, mass media should publish news describing the consequences of violence and ways to put an end to the repression.
The ceremony, organised by the ministry, was on the launching of three advertisements to be published through mass media to increase awareness about violence against women.
One advertisement portraits eve teasing while the other two describes child marriage and role of parents towards daughters in their families.
Stressing on effective implementation of law in preventing torture, the state minister also said the Domestic Violence Prevention Act, 2010 is supposed to be passed in the next session of parliament.
Speaking as the special guest, Chairman to the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the ministry Meher Afroze Chumki urged the media to portray the contribution of women in the development process of the country.
A good number of journalists joined the seminar and expressed their views about repression against women.
