9 shanties gutted in Chittagong
Nine shanties and valuables worth around Tk 30 lakh were gutted in a fire at the city's East Nasirabad yesterday.
Sources said the fire broke out at a shanty of Mohsin Colony, owned by one Mohammad Mohsin, around 12:00 noon and spread fast engulfing the adjoining eight shanties.
Jasim Uddin, deputy assistant director of Fire Service and Civil Defence, Chittagong Headquarters, said all 97 rooms in the shanties were gutted rendering over three hundred people, mostly day-labourers, homeless.
Nine fire fighting units from the city's different fire stations rushed to the spot and doused the flame after a one-hour hectic effort, he said.
The origin of the fire could not be known immediately said Jasim adding that the extent of losses in the fire was estimated at Tk 30 lakh.
