Banned outfit JMB's Acting Chief Anwar Alam, also known as Bhagne Shahid, yesterday confessed to his involvement in an attempt to kill professor Humayun Azad in February 2004. Metropolitan Magistrate AKM Emdadul Haque recorded Shahid's confessional statement and ordered to send him to jail. Mostafizur Rahman, inspector of criminal investigation department (CID) and investigation officer (IO) of the case, said Bhagne Shahid revealed another new name involved in the attack. The IO, however, declined to mention the name. According to Shahid, Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh (JMB) leader Nurullah also accompanied them, said CID sources. Upon conducting its first probe, CID had framed charges against five JMB men including the outfit leader Abdur Rahman and his brother Ataur Rahman Sunny on November 15, 2007. The three others charged in this connection were Nur Mohammad alias Shamim, Anwar Alam alias Bhagne Shahid, and Mizanur Rahman Minhaz. The magistrate's court ordered police to investigate further as the deceased's family members in October last year rejected the first probe into the attack. They alleged that names of the masterminds were missing in the charge sheet. On February 27, 2004, assailants stabbed Humayun Azad with machetes in front of Bangla Academy in the city.
