The muggers, one of whom was shot dead by the gunman of lawmaker Abdur Razzak at Gulshan on Wednesday, had committed over 100 snatchings in the last six years. Md Sultan, detained accomplice of the dead mugger, yesterday confessed to their crime history and that the motorbike they used for the getaway that day was not theirs. He said their major areas of crime were the city's Dhanmondi, Gulshan, Rampura, Badda and Uttara. Kamal Uddin, officer-in-charge of Gulshan Police Station, told The Daily Star that they had produced Sultan before a Dhaka court yesterday seeking 10 days' remand. The court fixed August 22 for the hearing on the remand prayer. Sultan and his deceased accomplice Badal lived in Rampura Banasree area with their families, said the OC. They were once arrested in Dhanmondi and sent to prison for snatching. Later, as they took mugging as a profession, they started operating in other areas. The two used to snatch ornaments, purses, cellphones etc at gunpoint, the OC added. The day Badal was shot, the two were getting away on a motorbike snatching gold bangles and purse from one Rehana Parveen on Gulshan road No 79. Hemayet Uddin, gunman of Awami League lawmaker Abdur Razzak, said he shot the muggers from inside a sports utility vehicle (SUV) as they opened fire first. "The front right window of the SUV was smashed by bullets but thankfully Abdur Razzak was not in the car at that time," he said. Police said Rehana Parveen filed a case with Gulshan Police Station in connection with the mugging. Badal's body is still in Dhaka Medical College morgue as nobody has claimed it yet.
