Fake musk seized in Jessore
A Bangladesh Rifles (BDR) patrol team seized six pieces of fake musk from a bus in Sharsha under Jessore on August 10, says a press release of Directorate of Conservator of Forests.
The team led by 22 BDR Deputy Commander Maj Abu Basir, on information, raided the Jessore bound bus and found the abandoned pieces of musk.
They later handed over the musks to Saidur Rashid, divisional forest officer of Social Forest Department of Jessore, and Ashraf Hossain, deputy ranger, on August 12.
The forest officials sent the musk to Dhaka on August 18 for examination by Dr Topon Kumar Dey, forest conservator.
Dr Dey identified those as fakes after examination. He said scented musk can be found only in musk deer, located in Kashmir and Sikkim of India and Nepal.
Musk has long been used in making perfumes in many countries of the world while also being used for herbal treatments in Bangladesh says Dr Dey.
Musk deer has been identified as an extremely endangered species and thus is difficult to obtain, he added, adding that a vested quarter is deceiving people using the name of musk in different treatments.
A gang of smugglers is preparing fake musks like the original ones and selling them at high prices, it said.
Since there is a similarity between fake and original musk, it is not possible to figure out which one is real, said Dr Dey suggesting all to be alert about the quarter.
