Hundreds of students of Dhaka University's business faculty demonstrated yesterday demanding a new grading system formulated by the University Grants Commission (UGC). The students of 11th batch of the business studies faculty abstained from their classes and started protesting at noon, blocking the main gate of the faculty. They said the authorities must meet their demands by 3:00pm. Protesting students have broken some window panes of different classrooms and other rooms of the academic building. Vice-chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddique discussed the situation with business faculty dean Abbas Ali Khan. The UGC formulated grading system is being introduced for the students of 12th batch onwards. Students of the 11th batch demanded incorporation of the grading system from their batch, otherwise they would be discriminated in the job market. According to the new grading system, the agitating students said 12th batch students would achieve higher grade points than them. Shahid, a student of 11th batch said, “The students of 12th batch will achieve 3:00 while we will get 2.67 for getting 60-64 numbers, for 70-74 numbers 11th batch students will get 3.33 points while 12th batch will get 3.5 and for 75-79 numbers 11th batch students will get 3.67 points while 12th batch will secure 3.75 points.” He said the dean had given assurance that their demands would be met within seven days. “We will have no other options but to launch tougher movement if the demand isn't met within the promised deadline,” he said. Shahid said they have been demanding this from June last year. Another student of the 11th batch Kajal Abdullah said, “We, both the batches, would be in the job market almost at the same time. They [12th batch students] would get advantage because of the new grading system.” Urging the students to calm down, the VC and said they are considering the demands of the students with importance. The students opened the main gate to let the VC out but blocked in dean Abbas. Proctor of the university KM Saiful Islam Khan rescued the dean and escorted him to the vice-chancellor's office.
