Ctg steel mill fined for polluting air
Department of Environment yesterday fined a steel mill Tk 5.63 lakh for polluting air by emitting toxic smoke at city's Bayezid Bostami area.
A team of the DoE, led by its Director (enforcement) Munir Chowdhury, imposed the penalty on Islam Steel Mills Limited in a drive under Operation Prevent Environment Crime.
Munir said the mill was converted from a re-rolling unit without any clearance certificate from the DoE and it lacked "Fume Extraction System" which is mandatory for such a unit.
“In absence of extraction system, the toxic smoke from its oven is causing serious air pollution and exposing the locals to health hazards,” he said adding that the mill produces 20 to 25 tonnes of MS billet, raw material of rod, a day.
The mill was strictly directed to set up the extraction system within one month. Otherwise, it was warned of facing sealing off after disconnection of electricity, gas and water supply lines and legal action against the owner, said the DoE official.
