US support sought in health sector
Health and Family Welfare Minister A F M Ruhul Haque yesterday sought US support to strengthen the country's health sector and improving overall quality management of hospitals and health service centres.
The minister said providing quality health services is one of the top priorities of the government.
The minister made the remarks during a meeting with a joint delegation of US government, Bangladesh mission of USAID and Global Health Initiative (GHI) launch team at the ministry.
Health Minister Ruhul Haque led the Bangladesh side in the talks while US Ambassador in Dhaka James F Moriarty led the joint delegation.
It may be mentioned that Bangladesh was selected as one of the eight 'GHI' countries on July 23.
As a 'Global Health Initiative Plus' country, Bangladesh would receive all the support including additional technical and management resources, as outlined in the global programme, to quickly implement GHI's approach.
The Global Health Initiative (GHI) is a US-led global initiative of President Barak Obama. The US government is investing $63 billion over six years to help partner countries improve health outcomes through strengthened health systems. It has a particular focus on improving the health of women, newborns and children by providing quality health services and combating infectious diseases.
The other seven countries are Ethiopia, Guatemala, Kenya, Malawi, Mali, Nepal, and Rwanda.
As outlined in the US global health initiative programme, these countries will receive additional technical and management resources to quickly implement GHI`s approach, providing quality health services including programs and investments in HIV/AIDS prevention, malaria, tuberculosis, maternal and child health, nutrition, family planning, reproductive health, etc.
Both sides discussed aims and aspects of the programmes and weighed up various means related to their implementation in Bangladesh.
Later, a delegation of Bloomberg Philanthropies, a US-based international organisation engaged in programmes related to control tobacco met the health minister at the ministry.
Director, global health of the organisation Dr Kelly Henning led the delegation, said an official release.
