Odhikar, a human rights organisation, urged for releasing Amar Desh acting editor Mahmudur Rahman and its journalist Oliullah Noman to ensure freedom of thought, conscience and speech guaranteed by the constitution. The organisation made the call in its monthly Human Rights Report published yesterday. It also called for implementation of monthly minimum wage of Tk 5,000 and other benefits to garment workers to ensure their rights to food, shelter and health. The report also recommended releasing trade union leaders, NGO activists and garments workers arrested during recent workers unrests. An independent commission regarding extrajudicial killings should be formed and perpetrators of all such killings must be brought to justice after proper investigation, it suggests. The report says five persons reportedly died in jail custody in the month of August due to illness. It also suggests restoring fundamental rights of religious minorities, providing physical protection to those who have been abused, protection to opponent political activists and a transparent and accountable trial of BDR mutiny.
