Cancel WB, ADB loans in agri, education sectors

Civil society bodies urge govt

Twelve civil society organisations at a press conference yesterday demanded that the government should cancel all World Bank (WB) and Asian Development Bank (ADB) loans in agriculture and education ministry projects, said a press release. Refrring to the projects such as the NATEO, having 50 percent consultant costs, the organisations expressed concern that the projects may lead to commercialisation in agricultural input services. The organisations criticised the government for making a five-year plan without any participatory process and for recent loan agreements and power deals, which were done in a hasty manner and non-transparent way. Rezaul Karim Chowdhury moderated the press conference and Sayed Aminul Haque read the written statement. The organisations also presented a five-point demand, including declaration of participatory roadmap for five-year plan preparation, discouraging outsourcing planning process to former employees of WB and ADB and avoiding consultants favoured by donors for appointment in government committees. The organisations included BNNRC, CDP, DORP, IED, Bangladesh Krishak Federation, Solidarity Workshop, Online Knowledge Centre, Lead Trust, Prodip, Arpon, Nagorik Udyog and EquityBD.
