Road accidents kill 8
At least eight people were killed and 11 others injured in separate road accidents in Chittagong, Comilla, Benapole and Chapainawabganj yesterday.
Our correspondent from Chittagong reports: Four people were killed and 10 others injured when a bus and a CNG-run autorickshaw collided head-on at Patiya upazila yesterday.
Two of the deceased were identified as Zahida Akter, 35, wife of Jasim Uddin of Norht Deyand and her four-year-old daughter Shanu. They were autorickshaw passengers. Identity of two others, who were passengers of the bus, could not be known immediately.
Imtiaz Ahmed, officer-in-charge of Patiya Police Station, said the accident occurred when an Anwara-bound bus and a Chittagong-bound three-wheeler collided head-on near Eidgah Rastar Matha at about 1:00pm.
“After the collision the bus hit a roadside tree while the autorickshaw fell into a ditch,” Imtiaz said.
Zahida, her daughter and two unidentified persons, including a man and a child, were killed on the spot while eight sustained injuries.
The injured have been rushed to Chittagong Medical College Hospital, Imtiaz added.
The injured were identified as Khatiza Begum, 35, Anwar, 25, Hasina Begum, 70, Faruk, 30, Nasir, 34, Shafi, 30, Priyanka Devi, 20, and a five-year old unidentified boy.
A correspondent from Comilla says: Two passers-by were crushed under the wheels of a Chandpur-bound passenger bus on Dhaka-Chittagong at Kutombopur highway in Chandina upazila yesterday.
The deceased were identified as Md Shaffiuddin, 51 and Anwara Begum, 50, wife of Shamsul Islam of Kutombopur village under the upazila .
Police said the accident occurred when a Chandpur-bound passenger bus ran over them around 12:30pm while they were crossing the road.
Locals rushed to the spot and took the victims to Chandina Health Complex where the doctors declared them dead.
The driver and the helper of the bus fled after the accident.
A correspondent from Benapole adds: An eight-year-old school student was crushed under the wheels of a bus at Jamtola Bazar in Sharsha yesterday.
Agitated people stopped vehicular movement on the road for two hours following the death of Russell.
Police said a Jessore-bound speedy bus ran over Russell when he was crossing the road seeing his father on the other side of road at Jamtola Bazar, leaving him dead on the spot.
The driver fled leaving behind the bus. Police seized the bus.
Later agitated people withdrew their blockade following intervention by police and local political leaders.
Russell was a son of Nazrul Islam of Samta village under Sharsha. He was a class two student at Jamtola Primary School.
A correspondent from Chapainawabganj reports: An elderly woman was killed and a Nasimon driver was injured in a road accident on Chapainawabganj-Nachole road at Nayagola in Chapainawabganj yesterday.
The deceased was identified as Gendi Bibi, 65, wife of Taher Mondol of Uttar Bhabanipur under Chapainawabganj municipality.
Police said the accident occurred when a fish-laden Nasimon ran over Gendi as its driver lost his control over the steering while she was crossing the road around 8:45am. She died on the spot.
The driver of the Nasimon was injured seriously as it rammed a roadside tree. Locals rushed the driver Sharif, 22, to Chapainawabganj Sadar Hospital.
Later police recovered the body and sent it to hospital morgue for autopsy.
