Tk 225cr loss in Gorai dredging
JS body asks WDB to identify those responsible
Parliamentary standing committee on estimate yesterday asked Water Development Board (WDB) to identify those responsible for not maintaining a portion of the Gorai River after dredging, resulting in a loss of Tk 225 crore.
The committee also asked the WDB to submit a report to the committee after an investigation on the issue.
The decision was made at the 17th meeting of the committee held at Sangsad Bhaban in the city with its Chairman HN Ashikur Rahman in the chair.
During the meeting, the members of the committee were informed that Tk 225 crore was spent to dredge 19 km of the Gorai River from 1997 to 2001 and after that the then government took a project to maintain the dredging area for the next three years.
But the project of maintaining the dredging area was stopped due to change of the government. As a result, the navigability of the area returned to its previous state and Tk 225 crore of government money went futile.
The committee also recommended taking an integrated programme on sand extraction from riverbeds after making a full list of 'Volgates' machines that are being used across the country.
Committee members Hafiz Uddin Ahmed, Hafiz Ahmed Majumder, S K Abu Baker and M Rafiqul Islam were present at the meeting.
Concerned high officials of water resources ministry and parliament secretariat were also present during the meeting.
