Over 275 get diarrhoea in Satkhira

Over 275 people contracted diarrhoea after consuming adulterated and poisonous food served during Iftar at Kashimari mosque in Shyamnagar upazila on September 10, according to district health department sources. A total of 97 people of Shankarkati and Deyol village were admitted to Shyamnagar Upazila Health Complex till yesterday, sources said. The affected fell sick shortly after consuming the adulterated food and polluted drinking water during Iftar, Shyamnagar upazila health and family planning office sources said. The food was brought by devotees to be shared among those who came to offer prayers at the mosque, sources added. Abdur Rahim, senior medical officer of Satkhira Sadar Hospital confirmed the outbreak and said the affected were suffering from food poisoning due to the unhygienic food they ate. "At least two medical teams are working in the affected areas to combat the disease," said Satkhira Civil Surgeon SZ Atique. “We have sufficient medicine to tackle the outbreak," he added.
