Another 15 years' waiver on drugs demanded

Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society, Pharmacy Graduates Association and Swadhinata Pharmacists Parishad urged the World Trade Organisation (WTO) for another 15 years' waiver of pharmaceuticals from the patent laws. In a statement yesterday, the leaders of the associations said the exemption was given up to 2015 from 2005 for the developed and developing countries following Doha Declaration in 2001 to give the countries opportunities of manufacturing drugs at lower cost. But Bangladesh is yet to take necessary preparations to face the challenges of the patent laws after 2015, it said urging the government to take step in this regard. So prior to the annual conference of the World Trade Organisation (WTO) today, the leaders of the organisations demanded extension of the waiver to 2030 to protect public health. The agenda of this year's conference is to hold policy level discussions on the future of the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) of developing and least developed countries. President of Bangladesh Pharmaceutical Society Prof ABM Faroque, General Secretary Selim Azad Chowdhury, President of Pharmacy Graduates Association Ishtiaque Ahmed, General Secretary M Aminul Islam and Joint Convener of Swadhinata Pharmacists Parishad Suvash Singha Roy signed the statement.
