14 killed, 119 injured in road accidents

Fourteen people were killed and 119 others injured in separate road accidents in Dhaka, Manikganj, Chittagong, Faridpur and Pabna districts on Tuesday night and yesterday. Our staff correspondent in Dhaka reports: A pedestrian was killed last night as a bus skidded off the road on the Khilgaon Flyover at Bashabo point in the city and hit him. The Sayedabad-bound bus of Bimillah Paribahan was coming from Gaibandha district skidded off the road as its driver lost control over the steering and hit Monir Hossain, 28, leaving him dead on the spot around 10:00pm. Three passengers of the bus, including helper of the driver, were also injured in the accident. Our Manikganj correspondent reports: A Dhaka-bound bus hit a roadside tree after its driver lost control over the steering at Sutipara in Dhamrai upazila around 5:00am yesterday, killing four people and injuring 40 others on the spot. The identities of the deceased could not be known immediately. In another incident, an unidentified woman was killed and 40 other people were injured when a Dhaka-bound bus coming from Khulna plunged into a roadside ditch at Muljan in Manikganj Sadar upazila around 6:00am. The injured were rushed to Manikganj Sadar Hospital from where five were shifted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated. Our staff correspondent in Chittagong adds: Two people were killed and 10 others injured as a picnic bus overturned when it was crossing a speed breaker on the approach road of the newly opened 3rd Karnaphuli Bridge at about 11:45pm on Tuesday. The bus was going to Cox's Bazar from Motihar in Rajshahi, police said. The identities of the deaceased could not be known immediately. The injured were admitted to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Officer-in-Charge Aminur Rashid of Patiya Police Station said the people of local Roads and Highways Department in presence of police removed the speed breaker soon after the accident. The speed-breaker was built by the local people after a schoolgirl was injured by a microbus on Sunday morning. Later, the Roads and Highways Department re-constructed the faulty speed breaker on Monday as it was creating a huge tailback, the OC said. Our correspondent from Faridpur reports: One person was killed and 20 others were injured in a road accident on Dhaka-Barisal highway near at Shiramdia village in Nagarkanda upazila of the district on Tuesday night. The deceased was identified as Delowar Hossain, 45. Sources said the accident took place when a Dhaka-bound passenger bus (Bikash Paribahan) fell into a roadside ditch as its driver lost control over the steering on Dhaka-Barisal highway near Shakarpasha area around 11:30pm leaving one dead on the spot and 20 others injured. The injured were admitted to Faridpur Medical College Hospital. Our correspondent from Pabna adds: One more died in road mishap occurred on Pabna-Jessore highway at Char Shahapur intersection in the district on Tuesday night. Police sources said now the death toll reaches five. The deceased was identified as Rajat Ali, 39, a trader, of village Raghunathpur of Ataikula in the district. He was died in Rajshahi Medical College Hospital. Earlier four people including an UP chairman were killed in the same road accident. A correspondent from Sirajganj reports: At least one person was killed and four others were injured in a road accident at Konabari near Bangabandhu Bridge west connecting road of the district yesterday. The deceased was identified as Arjina, 18, daughter of Abdus Sattar of Beel Gajalia village under Kamarkhand upazila of the district. Police said the accident occurred when a passenger bus from Dhaka ran over a CNG run auto-rickshaw, leaving Arjina dead on the spot and injuring three others. Locals rushed to the spot and sent the injured to the Sirajganj General Hospital. Police recovered the body and sent to hospital morgue for autopsy. A case was filed with Jamuna Bridge West Police Station in this connection. The driver of the bus fled the spot with the vehicle after the accident. UNB from Sunamganj reports: Three people were killed and two others injured in a head-on collision between a coaster and a CNG-run autorickshaw at Dharanbazar in Chhatak upazila yesterday. Two of the deceased were identified as Suhela Begum, 25, and Delwar Hossain, 40, of Jalsi village of Doara Bazar upazila. Identity of the other, a male, could not be known immediately. Witnesses said, a speedy Sylhet-bound coaster (mini bus) collided head-on with a Jewa-bound autorickshaw in Dharanbazar area on Sylhet-Sunamganj highway at around 1:00pm killing three autorickshaw passengers on the spot and injuring two others, including a minor. On information, police reached the spot and seized both vehicles. They sent the bodies to local hospital morgue for autopsy. The injured were rushed to Osmany Medical College Hospital in Sylhet in critical condition.
